#20 Adapting In College

One of the hardest things to do in college is to adapt to the new conditions. Just like an organism will adapt to a new environment over time, you need to adapt and learn to use your skills to make yourself the most successful as possible. Based on your personality, major, and everything that makes you your own unique person. You will have a different way of adapting to what is thrown at you. This blog is based on my experiences of adapting to college and what worked for me.

One of the first things everyone will need to adapt to is being independent. There is no one going to wake you up and tell you what to do each day. Your professors aren’t going to care if you show up to class or not. That is your responsibility and if you don’t adapt to that, you will never have a successful college career.

To deal with this I decided to be over-organized and over-cautious with my actions. One of the things I was most conscious about was the time I woke up. If you have been to college you have most definitely met the person that sleeps in every single day, sometimes even missing class because of it. Even if someone wakes up thirty minutes before their class, you will notice that they will feel groggy and tired during lectures. My classes start at 8:30 am and I set my alarm for 7:00 am. This allows me to get my body and mind ready for the rest of the day. I have breakfast, review notes, and enjoy social media or just a simple walk. When I tell my friends I do this for these reasons I am often met with the response “You are crazy!” or “You are such a nerd.” Honestly, if they want to say that, I will gladly let them say that because it works for me and I am not going to let anyone stop it.

Branching off that last statement of people’s opinions, college is a time where you will be pressured to do a lot of things. Whether it is good or bad you often have an external force that is wanting you to complete their agenda. This can range from signing up for a club to even doing drugs at a party. This will be the only time I say it during this blog because we were told as kids so many times, “Don’t give two s*#% what other people think!” This goes back to being independent. You are your own person and you can make your own decisions. If you want to sign up for that club, do it! If you want to try something new at a party, do it! But, just know that any action you make can have a consequence or a benefit. I am not condoning activity that is harmful or dangerous, but I am not responsible for your decisions. The only person that you can blame is yourself.

Another thing to adapt to is eating habits. Everyone always hears about the Freshman 15. The notorious 15 pounds freshman put on when they go to college. Part of adapting to college is adapting to a healthy lifestyle. Making sure that you eat the proper foods not only assures a healthy body but a healthy mindset. Not eating vegetables or a balanced diet can result in tiredness and feeling bogged down. This is the last thing you need when you are trying to study for a Chemistry test you have the next day. Adopting a healthy eating habit also means adopting a healthy exercise habit. Staying inside to play video games and study all day is something some of you might be tempted to do. DON’T DO IT!! Be social and exercise. Get your mind and your body in the right place to be successful.

The last piece of advice I will leave you with is to be flexible and absorbing. Do not come into college with a strict and stiff mindset because just like a dry stiff piece of wood, if you bend it too much out of place it will snap and that cannot be replaced. Instead, be absorbing and flexible so you can learn from your experiences and bend into new and exciting shapes.
